Greatland Resources share price (ASX: GGP) rallied sharply on Friday, after the gold and copper producer reported exceptional drilling results and record exploration activity at its flagship Telfer project in Western Australia.

GGP shares closed at A$13.94 on the ASX, up 7.64% on the day, ranking among the top performers on the ASX 200 index. The stock touched an intraday, and new all-time-high of A$14.43, almost doubling from its June 2025 ASX listing price of A$7.30. Trading volumes were elevated as markets responded to the operational update, with the company’s market capitalisation now up to A$9.38 billion.

The Latest

The company’s December 2025 quarterly report revealed a drilling programme of unprecedented scale and quality. Greatland completed 54,204 metres of drilling at Telfer during the quarter, lifting the first-half FY26 total to 106,766 metres—a company record. The extensive campaign is designed to expand mineral resources and extend the mine life at the 40-year-old operation, which has been revitalised under Greatland’s ownership.

The standout result came from the West Dome Underground project, where drilling intersected 55.3 metres grading 7.4 grams per tonne gold and 0.43% copper. This represents the highest-grade intercept recorded at West Dome Underground to date and significantly exceeds previous results from the deposit. The company is now targeting a maiden Mineral Resource estimate for the underground component in the March 2026 quarter, which would provide the foundation for future mining studies.

Resource growth and conversion drilling continues across multiple fronts at Telfer. The West Dome Open Pit and Main Dome Underground projects are both benefiting from ongoing programmes aimed at improving geological confidence and converting inferred resources to higher-confidence categories. More than 100,000 metres of new drilling data will feed into an updated Telfer Mineral Resource estimate expected in the coming months.

Regional exploration also delivered encouraging signs of broader mineralisation potential. The Teague prospect, located within Greatland’s extensive tenure, returned an intercept of 8 metres grading 1.30 g/t gold, supporting the case for additional discoveries beyond the established mining centres.

The drilling success builds on strong operational performance reported in recent quarters. During the September 2025 period, Telfer produced 80,890 ounces of gold and 3,366 tonnes of copper at an all-in sustaining cost of $2,155 per ounce. The operation achieved a gold recovery rate of 88.6%, the highest level since 2010, demonstrating improved metallurgical performance. Financially, the quarter generated $476 million in net revenue and $284 million in operating cash flow, leaving the company with a cash balance of $750 million and zero debt as of September 30.

Beyond Telfer, Greatland has been advancing its broader exploration portfolio. The company recently earned a 51% interest in the Paterson South project through a joint venture with Rio Tinto, marking a significant milestone in its partnership with one of the world’s largest mining companies. The arrangement provides Greatland with exposure to additional prospective ground in the highly mineralised Paterson Province.

Outlook and Analysis

Markets are now focused on the forthcoming Mineral Resource update and the maiden resource estimate for West Dome Underground. The high-grade nature of recent intercepts suggests the potential for a substantial underground mining operation that could complement existing open-pit activities and extend Telfer’s production profile well beyond current mine plans.

The company’s debt-free balance sheet and substantial cash position provide financial flexibility to fund ongoing exploration and development activities without dilution. With more than 100,000 metres of drilling data yet to be incorporated into resource models, markets are anticipating material upgrades to Telfer’s mineral inventory.

However, the rapid share price appreciation also raises questions about valuation sustainability. At current levels, the stock is trading well above initial analyst targets, and any disappointment in resource conversion rates or production performance could trigger profit-taking. All-in sustaining costs of $2,155 per ounce remain elevated relative to many Australian gold producers, leaving margins vulnerable to gold price volatility.

Bull Case:

  • Record 106,766 metres drilled in half-year demonstrates aggressive resource expansion programme
  • Highest-grade intercept at West Dome Underground significantly exceeds previous results
  • Debt-free balance sheet with $750 million cash supports growth without dilution
  • Partnership with Rio Tinto validates exploration potential across broader portfolio
  • Gold recovery rate of 88.6% represents best metallurgical performance since 2010

Bear Case:

  • All-in sustaining costs of $2,155 per ounce exceed many peer producers
  • Share price nearly doubled since listing may limit further upside potential
  • Resource conversion risk remains until maiden West Dome Underground estimate delivered
  • Telfer is a mature 40-year-old operation with inherent geological complexity
  • Elevated valuation leaves stock vulnerable to any operational or market disappointments

The December quarter drilling campaign positions Greatland for potential resource growth, but the company must now demonstrate that high-grade intercepts translate into economically viable mining inventory. With a maiden resource estimate due in March and a comprehensive Telfer update on the horizon, the next few months will be critical in determining whether recent market enthusiasm is justified by underlying fundamentals or whether expectations have run ahead of reality.
