EQ Resources shares (ASX:EQR) finished as the worst performer on the ASX 200 today, despite delivering its strongest revenue month on record in August. With the EQR share price up 862.5% over the past 12 months, the tungsten producer is heavily exposed to profit-taking even on genuinely strong operational news.

EQR fell 9.41% to A$0.38 today, striking when set against the company’s announcement the same day of back-to-back record monthly revenues, but it is less surprising in the context of the stock’s recent trajectory. The shares reached a 20 year high at A$0.44 out of the gate, only to pull back through a session that was broadly tough on Materials names, the sector down 3%.

The decline also fits an established pattern. In early August, EQ Resources appeared among the ASX’s biggest losers in sessions immediately following the release of July’s record results, suggesting that markets have repeatedly used positive operational updates as liquidity events to crystallise gains. For a small-cap resource stock with a momentum-heavy register, sharp two-way moves have become the norm rather than the exception.

What Was In The Print?

The August production report, at face value, contained little to justify the sell-off. Consolidated group production rose 34% month-on-month to 19,068 metric tonne units (mtu) of tungsten, the second-highest monthly figure in the company’s history, behind only the 20,838 mtu achieved in September 2024. Group sales totalled 17,246 mtu, generating A$55.1 million in revenue, a new record that eclipsed July’s A$51 million at an average realised price of US$2,269 per mtu.

At the Barruecopardo operation in Spain, production climbed 32% from July to 12,719 mtu, the highest monthly output in the asset’s history. The site sold 10,566 mtu for A$35.2 million at an average realised price of US$2,368 per mtu. At Mt Carbine in Queensland, production increased 38% to 6,349 mtu, with 6,680 mtu sold generating record monthly revenue of A$19.9 million at US$2,113 per mtu.

The August figures build on a strong July, when consolidated production reached 14,255 mtu, up 36% on June, and the company posted then-record revenue of A$51 million at a record average realised price of US$2,386 per mtu. Barruecopardo’s July output of 9,667 mtu was itself up 48% month-on-month at the time.

Underpinning the ramp-up at Mt Carbine are structural processing improvements, including dual high-tech X-ray transmission (XRT) ore sorters capable of upgrading low-grade ore with recoveries near 95%. The company has positioned these investments as evidence that recent production gains are sustainable rather than one-off, reinforcing its credentials as a meaningful supplier of tungsten, a designated critical mineral with strategic importance across defence, industrial and technology applications.

What Lay Ahead?

The tension between EQ Resources’ operational performance and its share price behaviour is likely to define the stock in the near term. On the constructive side, two consecutive months of record revenue at robust realised prices point to genuine operating leverage: rising volumes combined with firm tungsten pricing should, in theory, translate into margin expansion and stronger cash flow. The technology-driven improvements at Mt Carbine and the record output at Barruecopardo suggest the ramp-up has structural foundations rather than being a fleeting spike.

On the cautious side, a stock that has added more than 800% in twelve months puts plenty of expectations into the price. When markets are positioned for continued acceleration, results that are merely excellent, rather than transformational, can trigger mean reversion. The repeated pattern of sell-offs immediately following record updates indicates that traders are treating positive news flow as an exit point, amplifying volatility in both directions.

Key markers to watch include September’s production figures, the final assay reconciliation of the August numbers, and whether realised prices can hold above US$2,200 per mtu as volumes continue to scale.
