Downer EDI shares (ASX:DOW) have experienced a boost following the announcement of a major new contract with the Australian Department of Defence. The contract win signals continued confidence in Downer’s capabilities as a key service provider to the Australian government.
The Downer EDI share price is up 3.03% to $7.13 following the announcement. This extends the stock’s gains to 35.81% year-to-date, reflecting positive market sentiment surrounding the company’s recent performance and contract wins.
The newly awarded Property and Asset Services (PAS) contract is valued at approximately $3.05 billion over an initial six-year term. Commencing in February 2026 and running until 2032, the PAS contract falls under Defence’s Base Services Transformation program. The contract includes two extension options of between one and three years each, potentially extending the total contract duration to ten years.
In addition to the PAS contract, Downer recently secured an Integrated Work Package (IWP) with the Capability, Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) worth approximately $220 million over four years, including extension options. This IWP supports critical projects for the Department of Defence’s Joint Systems Division.
Furthermore, Downer received a six-month extension to its Estate Maintenance and Operation Services (EMOS) contract, ensuring continuity of services across key Defence bases. The company is also involved in the Woomera Redevelopment Program Planning Phase, a joint venture project estimated at $500 million to $750 million.

“Downer is a long-standing Defence partner, and has been providing sustainment, infrastructure, and estate services for more than 80 years,” said Peter Tompkins, CEO of Downer. “We are proud of the role we play as the custodian of Defence estates, supporting the working environments that enable an agile and capable Defence force.”
These contract wins collectively strengthen Downer’s position as a leading integrated services provider to the Australian Department of Defence. The market appears to be reacting positively to the consistent flow of contract awards, viewing them as a sign of stability and future revenue generation.
However, the reliance on government contracts also exposes Downer to potential risks associated with changes in government policy and budget allocations.
Downer EDI shares reflect a company benefiting from strong government partnerships. The company’s ability to secure and execute these contracts will be crucial in sustaining its growth trajectory.
