CSL Limited (ASX:CSL) is attempting to stabilize after a significant decline, with the stock searching for a support level amidst restructuring announcements and revised profit forecasts. The developments have created a bearish sentiment around the biotech giant.

The recent downturn stems from several key events. On August 19th, CSL unveiled a restructuring plan that includes spinning off its vaccine division and reducing its workforce by approximately 3,000 positions, representing about 15% of its employees outside the U.S. plasma unit.
The company cited challenges in the vaccine market and slower growth in plasma collection as drivers for this decision. According to Reuters, these difficulties included “highly irrational” softness in the U.S. market. The announcement triggered a 15% plunge in CSL’s share price, reflecting market concerns about the future impact of these strategic shifts on earnings.
Adding to the pressure, CSL’s profit forecast for the 2025 financial year, released in August 2024, projected a statutory net profit after tax between $3.2 billion and $3.3 billion. This figure fell short of market expectations of $3.39 billion, leading to a more than 3% dip in the company’s share price at the time.
In November 2024, CSL issued 38,065 unquoted equity securities under an employee incentive scheme. While intended to align employee interests with company performance, such actions can sometimes raise concerns about potential dilution for existing shareholders.
Despite these challenges, CSL announced an increased interim dividend of $2.07 per share in February, up from $1.83 previously. This move signals a commitment to returning value to shareholders and could positively influence market sentiment.
The markets are closely monitoring CSL’s restructuring efforts and financial performance. The company’s ability to successfully execute its strategic plan and navigate market headwinds will be crucial in determining whether the share price can find sustained support.
