Capstone Copper shares (ASX:CSC) have broken back above A$14, closing 3.45% higher at A$14.10, after a solid 12 month gain. The recent bounce has been built on record second-quarter earnings, visible brownfield expansion, and a supportive copper price backdrop.
The move takes the Capstone Copper share price back above its 50-day average, which itself sits above the 200-day line, confirming a constructive medium-term uptrend at a time when the Street is already pricing in further upside.
The strength appears less about a single fresh announcement and more about investors leaning into a validated copper growth and earnings story. Capstone’s second-quarter results, released at the end of last month, showed record revenue of US$739.7 million versus US$543.2 million a year earlier, driven by higher realized copper, gold and silver prices. Adjusted EBITDA of US$354 million marked the seventh consecutive quarterly record, reinforcing a narrative of operational momentum that is now feeding through to share-price performance.
Contained copper production of 51,759 tonnes in the quarter included a record 18,190 tonnes from Mantoverde sulphides, with throughput running roughly 13 percent above design capacity. Management left 2026 copper production guidance of 200,000 to 230,000 tonnes and C1 cost guidance of US$2.45 to US$2.75 per pound unchanged despite input cost pressures, a signal that execution remains on track and that the company is confident in its ability to absorb macro headwinds.
Beyond the quarterly print, the board approved the Mantoverde Pyrite Augmentation project, a US$45 million investment expected to cut sulphuric acid use by roughly 20 percent and add around 3,500 tonnes per year of cathode copper. After-tax net present value is estimated at approximately US$200 million at US$5 per pound copper and US$200 per tonne acid, rising to around US$350 million at spot prices. That project sits alongside the Mantoverde Optimized brownfield expansion, which is progressing on plan with a tie-in expected this quarter, a capital cost estimate of US$176 million unchanged, and expected to add roughly 20,000 tonnes per year of copper and 6,000 ounces of gold.

The company also ratified three-year collective bargaining agreements at Mantos Blancos, reducing near-term labour risk, and cut net debt to US$674.9 million from US$780.1 million at the end of 2025, with total liquidity above US$1.08 billion. Diesel and sulphuric acid hedging and contracting to lock in a large share of second-half 2026 consumption directly address cost and margin risk, a move that resonates in a sector where input volatility remains a live concern.
Capstone’s realized copper price of US$6.22 per pound in the second quarter, up from US$4.39 per pound a year earlier, underscores management’s emphasis on supportive copper markets. That backdrop aligns with the broader narrative of electrification and infrastructure demand meeting tight supply, a theme that generally supports copper equities and helps explain why a high-beta name like Capstone can deliver outsized moves on stronger resource sentiment days.
Price Target, and Technical Setup
Consensus target price sits around A$17.53, roughly 24% above today’s close, implying that brokers remain comfortably constructive even after the recent bounce. Street commentary emphasizes record cash generation, an improving balance sheet, modest-capex brownfield expansions, a de-risked Santo Domingo development, labour stability, and supportive copper prices as the core of the bull case.
The stock is trading above its 50-day simple moving average of A$13.86, which itself sits above the 200-day average of A$13.58, a setup consistent with a medium-term uptrend. Bollinger Bands show a middle band at A$13.05 and an upper band at A$13.92, with the price now trading above the upper band, a sign of short-term upside range expansion rather than routine noise. Band width of around 13.35 percent points to elevated but not extreme volatility.
Bull Case:
- Record cash generation and falling net debt support multi-year brownfield expansion.
- Mantoverde sulphides beating design capacity, visible production and cost-down path.
- Supportive copper prices and consensus target 24 percent above current price.
Bear Case:
- Heavy capex guidance and Santo Domingo execution risk challenge near-term free cash flow.
- Beta above 3 amplifies downside if copper prices slip or macro sentiment sours.
- Input cost pressures and valuation closer to Street targets limit easy re-rating upside.
