The Australian dollar (AUD) has strengthened against the New Zealand dollar (NZD) following the release of weaker-than-expected New Zealand GDP data. The AUD/NZD pair rose 0.5% as markets reacted to the contraction in New Zealand’s economy.

NZD Weakens Against AUD

The NZD weakened after Statistics New Zealand reported a 0.9% quarter-on-quarter contraction in GDP for the second quarter of 2025, reversing the 0.8% growth seen in the first quarter. This figure significantly undershot consensus estimates, which had predicted a 0.3% decline. The disappointing data has fueled expectations of further interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), placing downward pressure on the NZD. Two-year swap rates reached their lowest point since early 2022. Markets are now pricing in potentially deeper rate cuts, including a possible 50 basis point reduction by the RBNZ in October.

Finance Minister Nicola Willis acknowledged the impact of global uncertainties, including tariffs, on investment. However, she noted early signs of modest recovery in the third quarter, citing improvements in manufacturing, services, employment, and spending data. These factors offer some hope that New Zealand may avoid a technical recession.

Conversely, Australia’s economy demonstrated stronger performance in the second quarter of 2025, boosting the Australian Dollar. Real GDP increased by 0.6% quarter-on-quarter, translating to an annual growth rate of 1.8%, its fastest in nearly two years. Household consumption, buoyed by interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), was a key driver of this growth. This positive economic momentum has led investors to slightly temper expectations for additional rate cuts by the RBA.

A Reuters poll indicated a subdued outlook for New Zealand’s housing market through 2027, despite the RBNZ’s monetary easing efforts. The poll projects a 1.3% rise in home prices in 2025, a significant downgrade from earlier forecasts, reflecting the challenges posed by rising unemployment and weak consumer sentiment.

AUD/NZD Analyst Summary

Bull Case

  • Australia’s economy shows strong growth, supporting the AUD.
  • RBA unlikely to cut rates aggressively due to growth.
  • Positive consumer spending data in Australia.

Bear Case

  • New Zealand GDP contraction pressures NZD.
  • Markets expect deeper RBNZ rate cuts.
  • New Zealand housing market outlook remains weak.

The divergence in economic performance – a contraction in New Zealand versus growth in Australia – coupled with differing expectations for central bank policy, has driven the AUD/NZD exchange rate higher. The Australian Dollar’s (AUD) relative strength reflects Australia’s more robust economic fundamentals, while the NZD grapples with the implications of a contracting economy and the prospect of further monetary easing.
