Australian Shares Fall

The S&P/ASX 200 closed at a loss, with declining stocks outnumbering rising ones by a margin of 786 to 431. Regis Resources Ltd was a notable exception, gaining 7.21% to close at A$6.10. Genesis Minerals Ltd and Emerald Resources NL also saw gains of 4.27% and 3.39% respectively. However, Treasury Wine Estates Ltd (ASX:TWE) was the biggest drag, plummeting 14.11% to A$5.99, a multi-year low. Hub24 Ltd (ASX:HUB) also experienced a significant decline, falling 5.54% to A$99.25.  Pinnacle Investment Management Group Ltd shed 5.39% to A$18.09.

Treasury Wine Estates’ sharp decline followed the company’s announcement that it was withdrawing its 2026 earnings guidance and pausing a planned A$200 million share buyback. The company cited weakening demand in China, despite the lifting of import tariffs, particularly for its Penfolds label. According to a recent Reuters report, “Treasury Wine pauses $130 million buyback, withdraws 2026 earnings,” these challenges have led to a revision of growth targets for Penfolds for fiscal years 2026 and 2027. The company also reported distribution issues in the United States following the exit of RNDC in California, resulting in an estimated A$50 million loss in sales and approximately A$100 million in unresolved inventory.

Hub24’s decline is notable given its recent strong financial performance. For the year ending June 30, 2024, the company reported net inflows of A$15.8 billion, a 62% increase from the previous year, revenue growth of 17% to A$327.3 million, and a record net profit after tax of A$47.2 million, up 24% year-on-year. Despite these positive results, markets may have anticipated even stronger growth or are factoring in potential future headwinds.

The gains in Regis Resources, Genesis Minerals, and Emerald Resources suggest a flight to safety, with markets turning to gold stocks amid the broader market uncertainty.
