The ASX 200 closed 0.39% lower at 8,926 today in a session marked that saw Telix Pharmaceuticals shares bounce on a major US collaboration while a2 Milk fell back on downgraded guidance, against the backdrop of rising oil prices once again, as weekend peace talks failed to give markets what they hoped for.

The ASX 200 tested intraday support, hitting a low at 8,889.60 in early trade before recovering to close above the psychologically important 8,900 level.

ASX 200 Today – Leaders and Laggards

Telix Pharmaceuticals led the index with a 7.72% rally to $15.77, adding $1.13 per share as markets absorbed news of a strategic tie-up with US biotech giant Regeneron. Pro Medicus climbed 4.30% to $132.38 following a contract renewal, while the energy complex delivered broad-based gains. New Hope Corporation advanced 4.63% to $5.42, Beach Energy rose 3.70% to $1.26, and Viva Energy gained 3.59% to $2.60. The major integrated players Woodside Energy and Santos added 2.61% and 1.65% respectively, reflecting resilience in commodity pricing and renewed appetite for cash-generative cyclicals.

At the other end of the spectrum, a2 Milk Company suffered the session’s steepest decline, plummeting 12.99% to $8.04 after the infant formula marketer trimmed its outlook. The $1.20 per share loss made A2M the single largest drag on the index. Ora Banda Mining fell 8.96%, Life360 dropped 8.06% to $17.91, and packaging group Orora declined 6.40% to $1.39, reflecting broader caution across small-cap cyclicals and growth names.

The news behind the moves

Telix’s rally was driven by a landmark collaboration with Regeneron announced over the weekend. The deal combines Telix’s radiopharmaceutical manufacturing platform with Regeneron’s antibody and oncology capabilities to co-develop therapeutics and companion diagnostics for multiple solid tumours. Under a 50/50 cost and profit-sharing structure, Telix will receive a US$40 million upfront payment covering four initial programs, with the potential to earn up to approximately US$2.1 billion in development and commercial milestone payments across the collaboration. If Telix opts out of co-funding specific programs, it retains the right to low double-digit royalties on product sales.

The partnership represents a significant validation of Telix’s platform technology and addresses a key investor concern around capital intensity for pipeline expansion. The company has been building momentum through 2026, with first-quarter revenue around US$230 million driven by strong US demand for its imaging agents Illuccix and Gozellix. The US Food and Drug Administration recently accepted Telix’s resubmitted marketing application for Pixclara, its brain cancer imaging agent, setting a target action date in the second half of 2026.

Pro Medicus extended its run of contract wins with a five-year, approximately A$37 million renewal with Northwestern Medicine in the US. Importantly, the agreement includes improved pricing terms and higher minimum commitments compared to the previous contract, underscoring the stickiness and pricing power of the company’s Visage imaging platform. The deal adds to a string of large US hospital contracts secured over the past 18 months, including landmark agreements worth more than US$300 million with major academic medical centres.

The session’s biggest loser, a2 Milk, revised its guidance downward as the company confronts intensifying competition in the Chinese infant formula market and higher-than-expected investment requirements in marketing and distribution channels. The downgrade marks a sharp reversal from earlier optimism around the company’s trajectory toward its A$2 billion revenue target and reignites concerns about structural headwinds in Chinese consumer markets, including declining birth rates and regulatory complexity.

Energy stocks rallied in tandem with firmer oil and thermal coal pricing, underpinned by persistent geopolitical supply risks and resilient Asian demand. Ampol gained 2.64% to $33.87, while coal producers Whitehaven and New Hope benefited from stable thermal coal contract pricing. The moves reflect a rotation back into free-cash-flow-generative cyclicals as markets reassess the balance between growth and value in a still-uncertain macro environment.

Markets will now look to upcoming earnings updates and macro data, with the geopolitical backdrop also likely to play an oversized role in what happens in the days ahead.
