The S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.47% to 8,621.70 points today, bouncing sharply from yesterday’s selling as easing rate fears and softer oil prices triggered a broad-based rally into cyclical sectors.

The benchmark index added 126 points in a dramatic sentiment shift that saw Materials lead the charge with a 2.56% gain, while Industrials rose 1.62% and Financials climbed 1.45%. Energy was the major laggard, slipping 0.95% as crude prices retreated below USD 100 per barrel on reports that US-Iran negotiations were nearing completion.

Virgin Australia Holdings emerged as the session’s standout performer, surging 9.33% to $2.46 as lower fuel costs and robust travel demand combined to lift the carrier. Lithium plays dominated the top of the leaderboard, with Elevra Lithium jumping 9.3% to $12.22 and IGO Ltd advancing 7.46% to $9.07. Mining services provider IMDEX Ltd rounded out the leaders with a 6.05% gain to $4.03.

At the bottom end, Stanmore Resources tumbled 7.66% to $2.41, while Contact Energy fell 5.49% to $7.75. REA Group declined 3.67% to $158.47, highlighting selective profit-taking in premium-valued growth names even as cyclicals rallied.

Driving The Movement

The session’s strength reflected a mix of macro developments that eased near-term risks across multiple fronts, and markets that had already been sold down.

Australian unemployment data came in higher than the previous reading, reducing market expectations for further Reserve Bank of Australia rate hikes and supporting rate-sensitive sectors. The softer labour print follows recent patterns where the RBA has maintained a data-dependent stance, with markets highly attuned to any shift in the probability of additional tightening.

Also boosting risk appetite on the day were reports that diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran were entering their final stages removed some geopolitical risk premium from energy markets, pushing oil prices down and benefiting fuel-intensive sectors. The combination created a scenario where we could see enough cooling to ease monetary policy concerns without signalling an imminent hard landing.

Materials companies captured the bulk of the upside as the sector’s 2.56% advance reflected both macro relief and specific catalysts. The lithium complex found support from the less aggressive rate outlook and continued messaging around structural demand growth. Elevra Lithium’s recent SEC filings reiterate expectations for an 18% compound annual growth rate in global lithium demand through 2030, driven by electric vehicle adoption and energy storage deployment.

IGO Ltd, which operates across both lithium and nickel, benefited from the broader battery-metals bid as markets reassessed the risk-reward profile for producers positioned to supply the energy transition.

Virgin Australia’s 9.33% surge reflected the airline’s high operational leverage to both fuel costs and demand trends. The carrier, which returned to the ASX following its post-administration restructuring, has seen choppy trading as markets weigh strong passenger volumes against cyclically elevated input costs. Today’s move in crude oil provided immediate margin relief, while the softer rate outlook supports discretionary travel spending across both corporate and leisure segments.

The Financials sector’s 1.45% advance came as the major banks rallied on expectations that the RBA’s hiking cycle may be complete. Even without further rate increases, Australian banks are operating with structurally higher net interest margins compared to the pre-tightening era, while credit quality concerns have remained anchored by resilient employment and household balance sheets.

It has been a difficult month for ASX bulls, with the index down 3.66% on the period despite today’s bounce. The 8,500 level does appear to be offering some support during recent tests, although a sustained rally from here will be dictated by the macro and geopolitical environment more than technicals. There are big factors at play.
