The ASX 200 closed 0.69% higher at 8,717.70 today, reclaiming the key 8,700 level and closing at the day’s high as cooler-than-expected April inflation data eased immediate rate hike fears and triggered a broad rotation into technology and quality growth stocks.

The index’s close at the session high represents a bullish signal, with buyers maintaining control into the finish on a broad based bounce. Information Technology led all sectors with a 1.78% gain, while Materials added 0.92%, Industrials rose 0.7%, Energy climbed 0.43%, and Financials edged up 0.1%.

ASX 200 Today: Leaders and Laggards

Megaport shares (MP1) emerged as the leading name on the day, surging 8.63% to $14.98, followed by Infratil Ltd, which jumped 5.8% to $13.14. NEXTDC Ltd added 3.75% to $15.20, while Fisher & Paykel Healthcare gained 4.13% to $31.29 and Genesis Energy rose 4.06% to $2.05. The technology and infrastructure-focused gains underscored a clear shift toward long-duration growth assets as macro tail risks receded.

On the downside, ASX Ltd were the worst performer on the day, falling 9.74%, compounding yesterday’s drop on cost guidance. Endeavour Group fell to a new low, down 4.87% to $2.93, while Neuren Pharmaceuticals fell 4.09% to $13.84. Battery metals producer IGO Ltd declined 2.32% to $9.25, and Charter Hall Group slipped 2.47% to $19.73.

The intraday bounce came as April’s Consumer Price Index showed headline inflation easing to 4.2% year-on-year from 4.6% in March, coming in below market expectations of around 4.4%. The underlying trimmed mean measure, closely watched by the Reserve Bank of Australia, printed at approximately 3.4%, broadly in line with forecasts but representing a meaningful deceleration from the prior month.

The softer inflation print prompted a sharp repricing in rates markets, with implied odds of an RBA hold at the June meeting now exceeding 90%. While inflation remains well above the central bank’s 2-3% target band, the data reduced the tail risk of a surprise tightening.

What Lay Ahead

The technical picture for the ASX 200 has improved materially. Reclaiming 8,700 and closing at the session high suggests buyers are looking to get back to that YTD break even line and beyond, following a shakier May that included geopolitical stress and the CSL-driven selloff earlier in the month. If the index can hold above this pivot in coming sessions, it opens the door for a further push.

The rotation into technology and infrastructure-style growth names like Megaport, NEXTDC, and Superloop hints at a basket-wide rerating of connectivity and data demand stories. If sustained, this pattern would mark a meaningful shift from the defensive, yield-focused positioning that dominated much of early 2026.

Softer inflation and a technically bullish session high close will go down as a win for bulls. Whilst inflation remains above target and RBA cuts remain off the table for now, with rises being almost priced out, the index could well be looking to turn positive on the year if the macro and geopolitical backdrop allows.
