Australia’s benchmark index, the ASX 200 encountered technical resistance at the psychologically significant 8,900 level on Monday, closing marginally lower despite strong gains in defence and uranium stocks offsetting sharp declines across the insurance sector.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index closed at 8,867.40, down 0.03% after touching an intraday high of 8,925.60 in early trading. The session’s price action highlighted a clear struggle to establish a foothold above the 8,900 mark, with the index retreating in afternoon trade as profit-taking emerged following the morning’s rally attempt.

Defence contractor DroneShield Ltd led the market’s gainers, surging 7.3% to $3.38. The company’s recent announcement of a new COO, along with the expansion of its research and development operations in the United States, including a second Virginia location, has rekindled market enthusiasm for the counter-drone technology specialist. The stock has become a favourite among growth-oriented portfolios seeking exposure to the defence technology sector.

The uranium sector demonstrated robust momentum, with Deep Yellow Ltd climbing 7.14% to $2.55 and Paladin Energy Ltd advancing 5.48% to $12.13. The dual rally reflects sustained optimism around nuclear energy’s role in global decarbonisation efforts, with uranium spot prices maintaining elevated levels as utilities scramble to secure long-term supply contracts.

Buy-now-pay-later provider ZIP Co Ltd added 6.07% to reach $2.62, continuing its recovery from earlier weakness as the company expands its customer base and market penetration. Shipbuilder Austal Ltd rose 5.5% to $6.52, supported by ongoing contract wins and vessel deliveries that have bolstered the company’s order book. Biotechnology firm Mesoblast Ltd gained 5.49% to $2.50 following positive clinical trial updates, while platinum producer Zimplats Holding Ltd advanced 5.28% to $22.94 on strong production figures and favourable commodity pricing.

Lagging the index today were insurance broker Steadfast Group, falling 9.46% to $4.50 as pressure continues to mount on the stock. The continued selloff suggests markets are reassessing the company’s earnings trajectory and competitive positioning within the intermediary sector.

Insurance Australia Group Ltd tumbled 6.19% to $7.28, weighed down by elevated claims costs that threaten to compress margins. Fellow insurance broker AUB Group Ltd fell 6.11% to $25.95, facing similar headwinds from competitive pressures and margin challenges. New Zealand-based Contact Energy Ltd dropped 6.47% to $7.81 as regulatory uncertainties and shifting market dynamics cloud the energy provider’s profitability outlook.

Healthcare heavyweight CSL Ltd declined 4.98% to $171.39, the biotechnology giant’s retreat reflecting market concerns about decelerating sales growth in key product lines. The stock’s weakness contributed meaningfully to the index’s inability to hold morning gains, given CSL’s substantial weighting in the ASX 200.

The technical picture for the ASX 200 shows a market testing overhead resistance with limited conviction. While the index has managed to probe above 8,900 intraday, the failure to close above this threshold suggests sellers remain active at higher levels. Markets will be watching whether accumulation emerges on any pullback toward 8,850 support, or whether momentum fades further in the absence of fresh catalysts.
