The ASX 200 index fell 0.23% today, with the break below the 9200 level perhaps the more crucial move, as the XJO closed out at 9,188.50. Here’s a look at what happened on the day.
Materials bore the brunt of selling pressure, falling 0.71%, while Energy shed 0.35% and Industrials eased 0.26%. Financials bucked the trend with a modest 0.08% gain, underpinned by strength in ANZ and ASX Ltd.

At the other end of the spectrum, Alcoa shares fell 7.32% to $73.19, Austal closed 6.77% lower at $4.13, HomeCo Daily Needs REIT dropped 5.49%, and Insurance Australia Group moved 5.10% lower.

Heading Into The Final Session Of The Week
The pattern on the day suggests that markets may be pricing in a more cautious global growth outlook, while still rewarding companies with visible earnings, and strong balance sheets.
The strength in ANZ and ASX Ltd, and the weakness in Insurance Australia Group all came off the back of individual financial updates, with ANZ in particular moving in the opposite direction to it’s big four bank peers on the week.
With the ASX 200 dipping below 9200 ahead of the week’s final trading session, there will be plenty eyeing a break to the upside into the weekend, with this week currently set to close 0.8% lower. After two consecutive weeks of gains that had seen the bluechip index add 5.6%, a pause around the height of a busy earnings period would not be the end of the world. Sitting more than 10% up from the 52 week low would have been well received by bulls five short months ago, with some profits expected to be taken around what is a key level of friction.
