Aussie markets closed modestly lower today, as escalating conflict between the United States and Iran drove a sharp rotation into traditional energy stocks, lifting oil and gas producers while uranium plays and financials retreated.
The S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.17% to 8,793.50, slipping back below the 8,800 level, whilst the broader ASX All Ords Index managed to cling to 9,000, down just 0.02% at 9,001.30.
ASX Today: Sector Movers
The session was characterised by extreme sector dispersion, with Energy surging 1.98% to lead the market as West Texas Intermediate crude oil approached US$80 per barrel.
Materials added 0.67%, but Financials fell 0.54% and Industrials declined 0.47%, reflecting concerns that sustained geopolitical risk and higher oil prices could act as a brake on global growth.
Individual leaders and laggards
Woodside Energy shares climbed 3.38% to $30.31, Beach Energy advanced 2.86% to $0.90, and thermal coal producers Whitehaven Coal and Yancoal Australia rallied 3.05% and 3.14% respectively.

The standout performer on the ASX 200 was Stanmore Resources, which surged 9.55% to $2.695, whilst Light & Wonder jumped 7.57% to $111.17 ahead of its quarterly results.
On the downside, uranium-focused Paladin Energy tumbled 5.78% to $9.13 and NexGen Energy fell 3.52% to $13.16, as markets rotated out of the nuclear fuel story and into hydrocarbons.
Battery metals play Sunrise Energy Metals dropped 4.16% to $14.97, whilst defensive staple Metcash declined 3.90% to $2.96.
Driving the energy move
The catalyst for the energy sector outperformance was renewed military tension in the Persian Gulf, with fresh US strikes and Iran-related disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz pushing Brent and WTI crude back toward the psychologically important US$80 level.
The conflict has effectively unwound the brief optimism that followed earlier diplomatic overtures, with markets now pricing in renewed supply risk from one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints.
The strength in thermal coal names also suggests the rotation into energy is broader than just oil and gas, with the move following a pattern that had been set in the weeks following the start of the conflict this year. Markets appear to be embracing the entire hydrocarbon complex, with higher oil costs supporting coal on relative pricing and substitution narratives for Asian power producers.
Tech and Growth Names Show Resilience
Despite the macro headwinds, select technology and growth stocks demonstrated resilience. WiseTech Global rebounded 4.71% to $34.89 to halt a four day sell-off, back 21% above the recent low.
Employment marketplace Seek advanced 4.6% to $13.87, suggesting relief that geopolitical tensions have not yet fed through into hard labour market data that would undermine hiring activity. The online classifieds operator had lagged in recent sessions along with other high-multiple growth stocks, making the catch-up move notable.
Light & Wonder’s 7.57% surge to $111.17 came as markets positioned ahead of the gaming technology company’s upcoming second-quarter results, with management having recently reaffirmed outlook guidance.
Treasury Wine Estates rose 3.75% to $4.70, continuing to trade on its reopening and China-exposure story.
Bull Case:
- Energy sector strength on US$80 oil provides earnings upgrade catalyst for major producers
- Quality growth stocks showing resilience suggests no wholesale derating of the complex
- Mining services strength hints at sustained confidence in resources capital expenditure cycle
Bear Case:
- Geopolitical risk from US-Iran conflict caps index upside and threatens broader sentiment
- Financials weakness after strong run signals caution about medium-term macro growth outlook
- Higher oil prices act as tax on consumers and cyclicals, pressuring margins
The ASX faces a delicate balancing act in coming sessions: energy strength provides index support, but financials weakness and geopolitical uncertainty create meaningful headwinds, leaving the market range-bound and vulnerable to headline risk whilst tactical rotations dominate daily price action.
