The ASX 200 started the week in strong form, rising 0.49% to close at 9,103.10 and reclaiming the psychologically important 9,100 level, as a powerful rally in resources stocks offset persistent weakness in the financial sector. The broader All Ords index climbed 0.51% to 9,316.70, pushing back above 9,300, continuing to narrow the performance gap to the bluechip index.
ASX Today: Materials Lead The Way
Looking closer at the sector drivers today, Materials added 2.43% to a fresh all-time high, propelled by a broad-based rally in London base metals and a weaker US dollar that lifted miners and gold producers. Energy added 0.47% and Industrials edged 0.1% higher, while Financials pulled back 0.72% as major banks extended their recent underperformance and health insurers faced earnings-related selling pressure.
Individual Leaders
Leading the charge was Paladin Energy, which soared 10.59% to $11.70 as uranium miners became the day’s hot property amid renewed nuclear energy enthusiasm. Ansell climbed 9.57% to $38.24 following what markets interpreted as a better-than-feared earnings result and improved margin outlook.
Fast-casual restaurant chain Guzman y Gomez jumped 8.99% to $29.10, extending its post-results rally after announcing record earnings, a dividend, and a buyback program in its 21 August full-year report. Entertainment group EVT gained 8.88% to $15.33 on strengthening domestic consumption trends, while PLS Group surged 7.89% to $5.47 after reintroducing its dividend alongside full-year results that reassured markets about cash flow sustainability despite the lithium price downcycle.
The session’s standout performance came from the commodities complex, where aluminium, copper, nickel, tin and zinc all rose between 1% and 3% on the London Metal Exchange overnight. This metals rally, combined with gold’s continued strength, created a powerful tailwind for Australian miners, leading BHP shares to a new all time high.

Today’s Laggards
NIB Holdings shares fell 9.05% to $6.73 after delivering full-year results that disappointed on claims trends and forward guidance, with the negative sentiment spilling over to peer Medibank Private. The health insurer’s sharp decline highlighted ongoing concerns about healthcare cost inflation and utilisation pressures in the domestic market.
Chorus fell 5.65% to $7.52, Megaport dropped 5.01% to $17.46, Reliance Worldwide declined 4.76% to $4.20, and Endeavour Group slipped 4.72% to $3.23.
What Lay Ahead?
Financial sector weakness represents the most significant headwind to broader market gains, with the sector accounting for four of the top five market cap leaders. The major banks’ persistent underperformance, combined with results disappointments in insurers, raises questions about domestic economic resilience and the sustainability of net interest margins in the current rate environment.
It appears to be more of a stock pickers market for the time being, and until reporting season is fully flushed through, there will be plenty of volatility in individual names reacting to their own results, and peers in sympathy.
