The ASX 200 snapped a three-day losing streak today, closing 0.36% higher at 8,614.30, as strength in mining and financial stocks outweighed weakness in technology and energy names. The benchmark index reclaimed the psychologically important 8,600 level, driven by a resurgence in gold prices above USD$5,000 per ounce and robust sector rotation into value-oriented cyclicals.

Materials led the charge, adding 1% as precious metals producers rallied on the back of bullion’s return to five-figure territory. The ASX 200 Financials sector contributed meaningfully to the advance, rising 0.57% as banks and insurers attracted buying interest. Industrials edged up a modest 0.07%, while Information Technology suffered a 1.25% decline as markets continued rotating away from high-multiple growth stocks. Energy lagged, falling 0.73% amid fluctuating oil prices and persistent geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.

Top Australian Brokers

West African Resources: gained 5.76% to $2.94, while Westgold Resources advanced 4.87% to $6.24, both benefiting directly from gold’s bounce back past the USD$5,000 threshold.

Summerset Group Holdings: rose 4.38% to $8.34, buoyed by strong earnings and an optimistic outlook in the aged care sector.

Bellevue Gold and Resolute Mining also posted solid gains of 4.28% and 4.09% respectively, underscoring the sector-wide momentum in precious metals.

The Day’s Laggards

Electro Optic Systems Holdings: plunged 16.98% to $8.90, whilst EQ Resources: tumbled 13.89% to $0.31 on disappointing quarterly production figures that fell short of market expectations.

Coal producers faced headwinds, with New Hope Corporation down 6.42% to $4.96 and Yancoal Australia falling 4.9% to $7.57, as the earlier rally took pause. Lynas Rare Earths declined 4.62% to $20.02 having earlier rallied after announcing an extension of its commercial supply agreement with Japan through 2038. The stock appeared to succumb to profit-taking after recent strong gains, with markets digesting the long-term nature of the contract against more immediate sector headwinds.

Broader market dynamics reflected growing expectations of monetary policy tightening, with  rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia moving the cash rate to 4.1%. Rising oil prices have reignited inflation concerns, prompting a reassessment of the interest rate outlook and contributing to the rotation away from rate-sensitive technology stocks.
