The ASX 200 closed out today at 9,043.50, up 0.32%, holding above the psychologically important 9,000 level for a second consecutive session. The hold came as Australia’s Big Four banks delivered substantial gains that offset weakness across technology and wealth management.

ANZ Group Holdings led the charge with a remarkable 8.47% surge to $40.35, marking the strongest single-day performance among major banks following its first-quarter trading update. Commonwealth Bank of Australia extended yesterday’s rally with a further 5.41% gain to $178.74, whilst National Australia Bank added 2.31% to $30.45 and Westpac Banking Corporation climbed 1.81% to $25.60.

The Financials sector (AXFJ) powered ahead by 2.56%, providing the heaviest contribution to the index’s advance. Materials stocks (AXMJ) added 1.13%, with Rio Tinto gaining 2.58% to $168.80 and Northern Star Resources climbing 4.00% to $29.39. Energy names showed mixed performance, with Origin Energy advancing 3.88% to $11.50 whilst the sector overall (AXEJ) dipped 0.18%. Industrials (AXNJ) retreated 0.87%, reflecting broader profit-taking after recent gains.

The session’s strength in financials contrasted sharply with significant declines among technology and wealth management names. AMP Ltd suffered the index’s largest loss, plummeting 26.65% to $1.28, whilst Pro Medicus dropped 23.88% to $129.00. Other notable decliners included Lovisa Holdings, down 11.02% to $29.39, HUB24, falling 8.65% to $79.87, and Xero, retreating 8.43% to $76.92.

Driving The Big Four Banks Today

ANZ’s first-quarter trading update revealed cash profit of A$1.94 billion for the three months ending December 31, 2025, representing a 17% increase from the average of the second half of fiscal year 2025, excluding significant items. The result demonstrated the bank’s progress in executing its cost-reduction strategy, with expenses declining 8% during the quarter.

The bank achieved a return on tangible equity of 11.7% and reported a cost-to-income ratio below 50% for the first time, marking a significant milestone in operational efficiency. The productivity programme, designed to eliminate duplication and simplify operations, has begun delivering measurable results across the organisation.

Commonwealth Bank’s momentum continued from its recent half-year results, which reported record profit of $5.45 billion. The bank’s strong performance has reinforced its position as Australia’s largest lender by market capitalisation, with its share price now trading at $178.74, reflecting sustained confidence in its earnings trajectory.

The banking sector’s collective strength comes as markets assess the impact of cost-cutting measures, productivity improvements, and stable credit conditions across Australian financial institutions. Net interest margins have shown resilience despite competitive pressures in mortgage lending, whilst expense discipline has emerged as a key driver of profitability growth.

The banking sector’s outperformance reflects growing market confidence in the sustainability of cost-reduction programmes and the potential for margin expansion as operational efficiency improves. ANZ’s achievement of a sub-50% cost-to-income ratio sets a benchmark that may prompt similar efforts across the sector.

Markets will closely monitor whether the Big Four can maintain expense discipline whilst continuing to invest in technology and regulatory compliance. The 17% increase in ANZ’s quarterly cash profit suggests that productivity gains can translate into meaningful bottom-line growth, even in a competitive lending environment.

Technical indicators suggest the ASX 200’s hold above 9,000 strengthens the case for further gains, particularly if banking sector momentum continues. However, the sharp declines in technology and wealth management stocks highlight ongoing rotation dynamics, with markets favouring value-oriented financials over growth names that have delivered strong recent performance.
