The ASX 200 held the psychologically important 9,000 level heading into the weekend, closing Friday 0.16% lower at 9,005.90, as heavyweight miners weighed on the day. With the reporting season having come to a close, the hold above 9,000 could prove important, with the bluechip index down 1% on the week. The broader All Ords index finished virtually flat, slipping 0.025% to 9,196.00, with the 9,200 level one to watch.

Driving The Movement Under The Hood

Under the hood of the index, the session’s standout story was the accelerating critical minerals trade. Sunrise Energy Metals led the market as high-grade scandium and nickel-cobalt development at its Syerston Project continued to attract market attention. The company’s momentum stems from progress surrounding a US$400 million conditional loan commitment from the U.S. Office of Strategic Capital, underscoring its strategic positioning in Western critical mineral supply chains.

Fellow critical minerals beneficiary Paladin Energy gained as sentiment around global nuclear power demand and spot uranium stability remained constructive, with PDN shares upgraded overnight.

Healthcare technology also extended its run. 4DMedical pushed higher following its recent FY preliminary final report and bullish broker commentary. The company highlighted commercial traction for its XV Technology software and CT:VQ adoption across US academic medical centers and SimonMed, while its acquisition of Vienna-based lung imaging firm contextflow has broadened its European footprint.

Technology and communication services provided key index support, with each sector adding around 1%. SaaS names Life360 and Megaport drew buying demand as lower bond yield pressures and robust post-earnings fundamentals reinforced appetite for high-margin digital platforms with steady international subscription growth.

Gold names outperformed as well, with Ora Banda Mining advancing alongside gains in Bellevue Gold and Pantoro, backed by global gold futures trading near historic highs and operational upgrades across Western Australian goldfield assets. Maas Group surged as markets reacted to ongoing execution across its civil construction, equipment, and regional real estate units.

The downside, however, was largely technical. The Energy index’s 1.22% fall was driven primarily by fuel refiners Ampol and Viva Energy trading ex-dividend, with Ampol distributing $1.85 per share. Underlying oil markets were supportive, with ICE Brent crude holding near US$96 per barrel, suggesting the moves reflected dividend mechanics rather than operational deterioration.

The successful hold of the 9,000 level keeps the index’s technical support intact, even as headline momentum paused. 3% lower over the past few weeks, yet 3.19% higher YTD leaves the index neatly balanced into the weekend.
