The S&P/ASX 200 index closed above 8,900 points for the first time since October, capping a robust week with a 1.95% gain as strength in healthcare and defence sectors offset weakness in materials stocks.

The benchmark index added 0.48% on the final trading day of the week to finish at 8,903.90 points, marking its strongest weekly performance in several months. The breadth of the rally was notable, with gains distributed across multiple sectors, though the session’s standout performers came from the small and mid-cap space.

Catalyst Metals Ltd led the charge, surging 14.65% to $9.00, while 4DMEDICAL Ltd climbed 12.14% to $5.08. Defence technology firm Droneshield Ltd advanced 7.84% to $4.40, continuing its strong momentum amid heightened global security concerns. Treasury Wine Estates Ltd rounded out the top performers with a 7.65% gain to $5.49, potentially reflecting improved sentiment around China trade relations and premium wine demand.

The materials sector presented a contrasting picture, with several mining stocks retreating following a series of record highs this week. Predictive Discovery Ltd fell 3.66% to $0.79, while lithium producer Pilbara Minerals (now PLS Grou) declined 3.11% to $4.68. IGO Ltd dropped 3.06% to $8.88, and Mineral Resources Ltd shed 2.4% to $59.78.

The week’s performance marks a significant technical milestone for the ASX 200, with the index reclaiming levels not seen since its October peak. The 1.95% weekly gain suggests renewed confidence in Australian equities, despite persistent macroeconomic headwinds including inflation concerns and global growth uncertainties.

The divergence between sectors tells a nuanced story. Healthcare stocks, represented by 4DMEDICAL’s strong showing, continue to attract capital as markets position for long-term demographic trends and innovation in medical technology. The defence sector’s strength, exemplified by Droneshield’s rally, reflects sustained government spending commitments and geopolitical tensions driving demand for security solutions.

The ASX 200’s return to 8,900 points establishes an important psychological level for markets as we move into the new year. Technical analysts will be watching closely to see whether the index can maintain this momentum or faces resistance at these elevated levels.

On the positive side, the strength in defensive healthcare stocks and growth-oriented technology names suggests markets are finding pockets of value beyond the traditional mining heavyweights.
