The ASX 200 Index (AXJO) closed above the psychologically significant 9,000-point level for the first time since October 2025, driven by a powerful rally in the financial sector following Commonwealth Bank’s better-than-expected profit announcement.

The benchmark index closed at 9,014.80, posting a solid 1.66% gain on the session. The move represents a significant technical breakthrough after months of consolidation, with the index last closing above this threshold at the end of October 2025.

Leading The Index

The financials sector emerged as the standout performer, surging 3.48% to lead the broader market advance. Commonwealth Bank of Australia shares jumped 6.82% to $169.56, adding $10.82 per share as markets digested the bank’s robust half-year results. The big four peers followed suit, with National Australia Bank climbing 3.4%, Westpac gaining 2.5%, and ANZ adding 1.3%.

Materials stocks provided support, advancing 2.11% as precious metals miners attracted buying interest. Evolution Mining surged 8.68% to $16.28, while Bellevue Gold climbed 6.3% to $1.855. The industrials sector contributed a modest 0.55% gain, while energy stocks remained essentially flat, slipping just 0.02%.

Top Australian Brokers

Commonwealth Bank’s half-year cash profit rose to $5.44 billion, exceeding market expectations and reinforcing the bank’s position as Australia’s most profitable lender. The result demonstrated resilience in the face of a challenging lending environment characterised by elevated interest rates and cautious consumer sentiment.

Beyond the banking sector, AGL Energy delivered the session’s strongest performance, rocketing 11.75% to $9.89 on raised guidance. Building materials manufacturer James Hardie Industries posted a 10.92% gain to $36.87, while medical imaging technology company 4DMedical jumped 8.45% to $3.85.

Lagging The Index

The session’s laggards told a different story. Medical device manufacturer ResMed fell 4.71% to $36.79, while biotechnology giant CSL declined 4.64% to $163.44, having earlier sat some 12% lower on the day following earnings and a CEO reshuffle. Resources stocks Stanmore Resources and Zimplats Holdings both retreated more than 3%, alongside Computershare, which dropped 3.13% to $31.29.

The breakthrough above 9,000 points arrives amid a backdrop of improving sentiment toward Australian equities, despite ongoing concerns about global economic growth and domestic inflation pressures. The financial sector’s dominance in today’s advance reflects markets’ confidence in the banking sector’s earnings resilience and capital strength.

The materials sector’s solid performance aligns with renewed interest in gold and other precious metals as portfolio hedges, particularly as geopolitical uncertainties persist. Evolution Mining and Bellevue Gold’s strong gains suggest markets are positioning for continued strength in commodity prices.

The contrast between today’s winners and losers highlights the importance of financial updates, and leadership changes… not the be unexpected.

Today’s decisive move above 9,000 points marks a significant milestone for Australian equities, driven by banking sector strength and supported by materials stocks. While the breadth of today’s advance provides encouragement, there will be plenty of additional updates that could shift the tide in sessions to come. Whether this breakthrough proves sustainable will depend on the durability of corporate earnings momentum and markets’ appetite for risk in an environment where economic uncertainties have not disappeared.
