AMP shares (ASX: AMP) have hit their highest level since 2018, touching A$2.54 on Wednesday before pulling back to close flat on the day at A$2.50.

The move caps a remarkable recovery from the stock’s March 12 low of A$1.14, where shares had bottomed following a 36.6% year-to-date pullback. Since that point, AMP’s share price has rallied 115%, leaving the stock sitting 36.6% higher for the calendar year, a symmetry that has not gone unnoticed.

Why Are AMP Shares Rallying?

The rally in AMP has been driven by a compelling operational turnaround, aggressive capital returns, and surging China joint venture earnings. The question now facing markets is whether the stock can sustain its gains above the A$2.50 threshold or whether near-term headwinds will cap the rally.

The consolidation around A$2.50 reflects a natural pause at a level that represents meaningful multi-year resistance. The stock had not sustained prices at these levels since 2018, and the RSI had previously breached overbought territory above 85, signalling that some near-term digestion of gains was both expected and healthy.

Latest Financials

The foundation for AMP’s re-rating rests on a set of H1 2026 financial results that delivered genuine evidence of a business turning the corner after years of post-Royal Commission headwinds.

Underlying Net Profit After Tax rose 32.8% year-on-year to A$174 million, while statutory profit climbed 57.1% to A$154 million. Total Assets Under Management expanded 8.9% to A$167.6 billion, and disciplined cost management pushed the group’s cost-to-income ratio down to 60.5% from 63.0% in the prior corresponding period.

Perhaps the most symbolically significant data point in the results was the performance of AMP’s Superannuation and Investments division, which recorded A$76 million in positive net cash inflows, its first positive half-year result since 2017.

Beyond the domestic business, AMP’s Chinese joint ventures delivered a standout result. Profits from the China Life AMP Asset Management partnership surged 107% year-on-year to A$56 million, with total AUM at the venture reaching approximately RMB 2.6 trillion on the back of rising domestic demand for pension and retirement wealth products.

On capital management, AMP’s board announced a new A$150 million on-market share buyback extending through April 2027, alongside a 50% increase in the interim dividend to 3.0 cents per share, partially franked at 20%.

What Next?

From a technical perspective, A$2.50 to A$2.54 now represents the key battleground for AMP shares. A sustained close above A$2.54 would open the door to a continuation of the trend, whilst on the downside, the buyback program provides a credible support layer in the A$2.33 to A$2.47 band, making sharp pullbacks structurally more difficult to sustain in the near term.

Fundamentally, the bull case rests on the durability of the superannuation inflow reversal, the continued scaling of the North platform, and the trajectory of China JV earnings. Bears will point to the stock’s extended run from its lows, residual legacy remediation costs, ongoing mortgage margin pressure at AMP Bank, and the competitive threat posed by lower-cost boutique platform providers chipping away at AMP’s adviser relationships.

New highs continue to come for holders, and momentum is with the bulls, yet risks remain live. We would be keeping an eye on the volume trend for signs of exhaustion, or for indications of profit taking up at highs.

Bull Case:

  • First positive superannuation net flows since 2017 signals the client outflow era is ending.
  • A$150 million buyback and 50% dividend hike provide structural price support and income appeal.
  • China JV profits doubled to A$56 million with AUM and ROI expanding rapidly.

Bear Case:

  • Multi-year resistance at A$2.50 to A$2.54 and an elevated RSI risk near-term consolidation.
  • AMP Bank faces ongoing NIM compression from fierce mortgage competition and funding costs.
  • Legacy remediation costs and low-cost platform rivals remain persistent structural headwinds.
