The All Ords Index closed the week at 9,006.40, down 1.8% on the week and now marginally negative for the year at -0.33%, as renewed oil price volatility and US-Iran headlines prompted a risk off mood ahead of the weekend.

Despite holding the psychologically important 9,000 mark into the weekend, market breadth told a more cautionary story, with decliners outnumbered gainers by 275 to 169, signalling distribution even as the headline index maintained support. The session saw sharp losses in high-beta resource names and prior multi-baggers, with QORIA Ltd tumbling 18.75% to $0.26 and IGO Ltd shedding 17.92% to $7.01. Energy Resources of Australia fell 12.50% to $0.0035, while healthcare standout 4DMEDICAL Ltd dropped 9.68% to $4.76 after a remarkable 1,600% gain over the past year.

The selling pressure was not uniform, however, with NUIX Ltd surged 14.98% to $1.535, COG Financial Services advanced 11.55% to $1.40, and lithium producer Elevra Lithium Ltd climbed 10.56% to $12.04, to lead the index on the day.

Momentum Pause

The weekly decline erases some of the strong momentum built over the past month, during which the All Ords added 5.08% since the start of April.

Markets have since been whipsawed by alternating waves of risk-off sentiment when conflict headlines intensify and relief rallies when ceasefire or de-escalation talk emerges. The flip-flopping nature of geopolitical developments has left the index range-bound near 9,000, with participants reluctant to commit capital ahead of clearer macro signals.

Among the day’s biggest decliners, IGO Ltd’s near-18% drop stands out following earnings. The diversified battery-materials producer has been a major beneficiary of the energy-transition theme in recent times, but strong gains has left high-flyers vulnerable to profit-taking on any disappointment. Similarly, speculative resource names Dateline Resources and Tungsten Mining NL fell 9.09% and 8.62% respectively, despite 12-month returns exceeding 200%, as traders trimmed exposure to volatile winners.

On the upside, Elevra Lithium’s strong performance reflects ongoing confidence in lithium demand fundamentals. Recent earnings commentary from the company highlighted robust project progress and revenue growth, supporting the view that quality energy-transition names remain in favour despite broader macro uncertainty. Forrestania Resources, up 8.60% to $0.505 and sporting a 997.83% annual gain, underscores continued appetite for junior exploration plays with battery-metals exposure.

What Lay Ahead

The All Ords’ ability to hold 9,000 despite negative breadth and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty demonstrates a degree of resilience, but the lack of follow-through from the March rebound raises questions about the sustainability of the rally. The index now sits at an important point, pausing at the YTD break even line, with bulls pointing to structural strength in energy-transition and critical-minerals themes, and bears highlighting elevated oil prices, weak internals, and the risk of further conflict escalation.

For the week ahead, markets will be watching for any developments in US–Iran negotiations and oil price movements, which have become the primary drivers of short-term sentiment. A sustained move above 9,200 would likely require either a meaningful de-escalation in geopolitical tensions or a catalyst from domestic earnings and economic data. Conversely, a break below support could trigger renewed selling pressure, particularly in the high-beta resource and small-cap names that have led both gains and losses in recent sessions.
