If You Missed The Earnings Details

For the six months ended 31 December 2025, a2 Milk reported revenue of NZ$993.5 million, representing an 18.8% increase on the prior corresponding period. Management attributed the growth to strong performances across all segments and product categories, with the company’s core products driving the majority of gains while recent innovation contributed incremental revenue streams.

The infant milk formula segment, which remains the company’s largest revenue contributor, posted sales growth of 13.6%. This performance underscores continued brand strength in key markets and demonstrates effective execution across multiple distribution channels, including daigou, cross-border e-commerce, and traditional retail.

Liquid milk sales climbed 18.5%, reflecting growing consumer demand in established markets. The Other Nutritionals category delivered particularly impressive results, surging 42.9% when excluding a2 Pokeno ingredient sales. This segment’s outperformance signals successful product diversification and the company’s ability to capture market share in adjacent categories.

Profitability metrics exceeded revenue growth rates, indicating operational leverage and margin expansion. Underlying EBITDA rose 25.9% to NZ$164.8 million, while underlying net profit after tax increased 19.6% to NZ$122.6 million. On a statutory basis, net profit after tax grew 9.4% to NZ$112.1 million, with the variance primarily attributable to one-off items and accounting adjustments.

The board declared an interim dividend of 11.5 NZ cents per share, marking a 35.3% year-on-year increase. The payout represents approximately 74% of net profit from continuing operations, signalling management’s confidence in cash generation and commitment to returning capital to shareholders while maintaining flexibility for growth investments.

The results build on the company’s record full-year FY25 performance announced in August 2025, when a2 Milk reported annual revenue of NZ$1.9 billion, up 13.5%, and net profit after tax of NZ$202.9 million, a 21.1% increase. That announcement also marked the company’s 25th anniversary and included strategic supply chain initiatives, notably the acquisition of the Yashili New Zealand facility and the divestment of its stake in Mataura Valley Milk.

Strategic Positioning

The company’s performance reflects sustained strength in China, which remains its largest market for infant formula products. Despite ongoing demographic headwinds in the form of declining birth rates across key Asian markets, a2 Milk has maintained its competitive position through brand differentiation centred on its proprietary A1-protein-free positioning.

Growth in the United States market has also contributed to the overall revenue expansion, with liquid milk products gaining traction among health-conscious consumers willing to pay premium prices. The company’s focus on the unique properties of A2 beta-casein protein continues to resonate with target demographics seeking perceived digestive benefits.

The Other Nutritionals segment’s 42.9% growth rate suggests the company is successfully broadening its product portfolio beyond core infant formula and liquid milk offerings. This diversification strategy reduces concentration risk and opens new revenue streams in categories such as adult nutritional products and specialty formulations.

Markets are now weighing whether the current momentum can be sustained against a backdrop of mixed macroeconomic signals and competitive pressures in the infant formula category. The company faces ongoing challenges from larger multinational competitors with deeper resources, as well as potential regulatory changes in key markets.

The dividend increase to 11.5 NZ cents per share demonstrates management’s conviction in the sustainability of current earnings levels. The 74% payout ratio strikes a balance between rewarding shareholders and retaining capital for strategic initiatives, though it leaves less cushion than more conservative dividend policies employed by some peers.

While the immediate reaction to earnings has been overwhelmingly positive, the A2M share valuation now reflects elevated expectations that will require consistent delivery to justify. Markets will be closely monitoring second-half trading conditions, competitive dynamics in China, and management’s ability to sustain the current growth trajectory as they assess whether recent gains represent a sustainable re-rating or an overextension that could invite consolidation.
