A new website has been launched to help Queenslanders find work after losing their jobs because of coronavirus.

Treasurer Jackie Trad announced the new service on Thursday, which will also help people gain further qualifications.

The new portal has come as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic forcing many businesses to close.

Ms Trad described the portal as the first major element of the government’s response to expected mass job losses.

She said the portal will help workers find jobs in industries which are going “gangbusters”, including education and public transport.

“This portal is going to be incredibly important and we will be relying on Queensland’s best job places to help people find new jobs,” Ms Trad said.

This comes after recent employment figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistic showed unemployment increased slightly amid the coronavirus fallout.

But the treasurer acknowledged the figures do not reflect the current climate Queenslanders live in.

“We know that these figures don’t represent the catastrophe that happened in the economy.”
