Miners and energy companies had the best gains as the Australian share market closed higher to start the trading week.

The S&P/ASX200 benchmark index finished in positive territory by 40.1 points, or 0.68 per cent, to 5899.5 points on Monday.

In the final minutes of trade, the index came within a few points of its session high of 5903.2 recorded in the first hour.

The All Ordinaries index closed up by 39.6 points, or 0.66 per cent, to 6078.5.

The Aussie dollar was buying 72.83 US cents at 1622 AEST, higher from 72.78 US cents at the close on Friday.
