Taking a look through the leading cryptocurrency winners and losers over the past twelve months gives us a list that is heavily weighted to the downside, with only a handful of the leading names putting up gains.

Our look at the top 100 tokens by market cap shows that the winners have come from privacy-focused and payment infrastructure tokens, with a couple of stablecoins also in the top 5, such is the dearth of gainers. The top performer on the year Zcash came in with a mighty 960% gain, while former market darlings Cardano and Solana have both posted losses exceeding 50%.

Zcash has emerged as the standout performer among top-100 cryptocurrencies by market cap, putting up mighty gains that have moved market cap to $9 billion and put the token into the top 15, and a place on many top crypto brokers‘ lists. The privacy coin exploded through 2025, and has continued to hold sway this year, now more than 1400% above it’s 52 week low. If you have been holding this one through a crypto winter, we tip our hat.

TRON is next on the list, having posted a more modest but still positive 34% gain, reaching a $33 billion market cap to secure the eighth position globally.

The performance of these stands in sharp contrast to Ethereum’s 24.02% decline and Stellar’s 26.82% drop. Also among the worst performers, Cardano plummeted 67.73% while Solana shed 50.87%, underscoring a brutal rotation away from general-purpose smart contract platforms toward more specialised names.

Stablecoins USD Coin and Dai maintained their pegs as expected, while BNB fell back 3.61% despite remaining the fourth-largest cryptocurrency at $85.53 billion. Monero, the original privacy standard-bearer, managed only a 0.34% gain as regulatory pressures offset its ideological appeal.

What Has Driven The Leading Names?

The Zcash rally coincided with what has been a “privacy renaissance” throughout 2025 and early 2026. The move gained momentum during an October-November 2025 surge exceeding 400%, widely framed as the return of the privacy coin narrative after years of regulatory stigma and exchange delistings. Coverage emphasised ZEC’s positioning as “encrypted money” with Bitcoin-like scarcity, a 21-million coin cap and halving cycles, but with optional privacy features based on zero-knowledge cryptographic proofs.

Analysts tied Zcash’s value proposition to growing political and tax pressures, AI-driven deanonymisation of transparent blockchains, and concerns around quantum computing threats to current cryptography. The narrative shifted from dark-web associations toward financial privacy as a hedge against surveillance capitalism. By May 2026, roughly 30% of Zcash’s circulating supply resided in shielded addresses, a record level that analysts interpreted as genuine privacy usage rather than purely speculative trading.

TRON’s performance reflected different fundamentals entirely.

In early March 2026, founder Justin Sun agreed to a $10 million settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, with the agency moving to dismiss its civil fraud case subject to court approval. Analysts called the resolution the removal of the single most significant regulatory overhang on TRX since the original 2023 charges around unregistered securities and alleged wash trading. Weighted on-chain sentiment metrics for TRX spiked to multi-year highs immediately following the settlement news.

TRON’s core value proposition centres on its dominance as a stablecoin and payments rail.

The network hosts an enormous stablecoin float, with on-chain metrics consistently placing TRON’s stablecoin supply in the $80 billion to $90 billion-plus range by early 2026. TRX is an infrastructure token with strong, sticky demand from payments, centralised exchange flows, and cross-border transfer use cases. The network demonstrated relative price strength versus broader altcoins through early 2026, trading around $0.28 to $0.30 while much of the market chopped sideways.

What This Tells Us For Next Year

The divergent performance among top cryptocurrencies signals a maturing market where generic smart-contract platform narratives no longer command automatic premiums. Markets are increasingly differentiating based on specific use cases, regulatory positioning, and institutional adoption patterns.

The sharp drawdowns in Cardano and Solana amplify the relative attractiveness of more defensively positioned or thematically clearer stories. Post-mania mean-reversion after extreme earlier rallies, combined with narrative rotation away from generic Ethereum-killer positioning toward more targeted themes, has left general-purpose smart contract platforms struggling for mindshare.

Stablecoins USD Coin and Dai continue to compete on different axes, USDC emphasising regulatory compliance and institutional-grade reserves versus Dai’s decentralised, collateral-backed model integral to decentralised finance. USDC’s expansion across Layer-1 and Layer-2 networks positions it as the default settlement asset in many applications, fostering network-effect stickiness. Dai faces criticism that a large portion of its backing in USDC and other centralised assets weakens its original purely decentralised narrative, though its treasury allocation into real-world assets generates yield supporting long-term sustainability.

With BTC prices down 32% over the past year, and more than 41% down from highs, there are plenty on the sidelines waiting for a bounce and a reversal. Whilst we can’t know where markets are going, we can take clues from what has been working over the past year of declines as a starting point. Although crypto related ETFs have seen drawdowns in recent times, the fact that institutions are continuing to watch the space, and have vehicles to participate when the time is right, could well see volume on the next bull run amplified.

Will last years winners follow through into 2027, or will there be new names to make the list next year?
