Consumers are being warned to be wary of heavily discounted mobile phone offers on Facebook as a scam is leaving victims around Australia out of pocket.

The logos, ABNs and other details of four mobile phone businesses in Perth are being used in bogus Facebook Marketplace ads offering cheap phones, with the scammers demanding up-front payment, but they are never delivered.

“The victims are lured by the low prices and soon find themselves out of pocket with some paying up to $2000 for multiple phones,” Western Australia’s Consumer Protection commissioner Penny Lipscombe said.

As soon the businesses get a fake Facebook page shut down, another pops up in its place, she said.

“We recommend that online shoppers take time to locate the real website of the legitimate business they think they are doing business with and contact them independently to verify their offer is genuine before parting with any money.”
