Too many people signed up for Victoria’s solar panel rebate scheme, forcing the state government to change the way households register for the program.

A fixed number of rebates will be available on a monthly basis and applied for by retailers, instead of putting the onus on the customer, the government announced on Tuesday.

The $1.3 billion program to roll out solar panels, batteries and hot water systems will restart from July 1.
