The Australian share market has closed lower as Victoria reported the most coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic and the country’s unemployment rate hit a two-decade high.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index finished Thursday down 42 points, or 0.69 per cent, to 6,010.9, while the broader All Ordinaries index was down 37.4 points, or 0.61 per cent lower, at 6,123.

The Australian dollar fell below 70 US cents after the jobs rate was announced and was trading at 69.92 US cents, down from 70.02 US cents at Wednesday’s close.
