SYDNEY, AAP – A broad-based rally has helped the Australian share market post its strongest session in more than a week, and best week in five.

The S&P/ASX200 benchmark index closed up 52.9 points, or 0.79 per cent, to 6766.8 on Friday.

The All Ordinaries closed higher by 61.7 points, or 0.89 per cent, at 7014.6.

The materials sector was up 1.62 per cent as iron ore prices improved, while information technology was the strongest sector, up 2.34 per cent.

For the week, the ASX200 rose 0.83 per cent.

The Australian dollar was buying 77.83 US cents at 1618 AEDT, higher from 77.45 US cents at Thursday’s close.
