The Australian stock market has closed lower, dragged down by weakness in technology stocks after a stellar run.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed Tuesday down 5,941.1 points, or 0.61 per cent, at 5,941.1 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index finished down 43.8 points, or 0.72 per cent, at 6,045.5.

The Australian dollar meanwhile was buying 69.54 US cents, down from 69.75 US cents at the close of trade on Monday.
