The Australian share market is expected to open flat despite gains on Wall Street overnight.

The SPI200 futures contract was unchanged at 6,710.0 at 0800 AEDT, suggesting a steady start for the benchmark S&P/ASX200 on Friday.

Trading resumes on the ASX on Friday for the first time since it finished marginally higher on Tuesday, after a break for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

On Wall Street the three main indices posted record closing highs, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.37 per cent, the S&P 500 up 0.51 per cent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite up 0.78 per cent.

The Aussie dollar is buying 69.48 US cents from 69.16 US cents on Tuesday.
