The Australian share market edged higher and hit another 11-and-a-half year peak in the process, with gains in the energy and mining sectors offsetting a slide in financial stocks.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed up 11.6 points, or 0.19 per cent, to 6,554 points at 1615 AEST on Friday, while the broader All Ordinaries was up 14.5 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 6,633.6.

The Aussie dollar is buying 68.98 US cents, from 69.09 US cents on Thursday.
