The Stockies is a running poll held on the TheBull website for two months. This timeframe lends traders and investors sufficient opportunity to cast their vote for their favourite online broker.

Traders and investors were asked to select the “best” across various categories.  Many voters also gave feedback to TheBull on their selection.

The polling software automatically collated the voting in real-time, and voting closed on Sunday 6 December 2009.

The voters have spoken in the 2010 Stockies awards, which declare and reveal the very best online brokers in the investment industry. let you, the very people who use the products and services of online brokers in Australia, decide the winners by casting a vote during the popular campaign.

Top online brokers competed in the following categories – shares, options, margin lending, warrants, CFDs, forex, futures and forum. Stockies awards are set firmly in the tradition that traders and investors are the best judge of the top online firms to deal with in Australia.

Many thousands of votes have been counted, so here are the winners.

Best CFD Provider: IG Markets

For the second year running, IG Markets claimed The Stockies award for best CFD provider, delighting the company’s chief executive officer Tamas Szabo. “Winning two years in a row is a great achievement and we’ll be doing everything we can to win the award next year and beyond,” Szabo says. “There’s no room for complacency. We aim for excellence in pricing and other aspects of the business that our clients value most.”

Szabo says winning the award via a voting system acknowledges that his company’s products appeal to investors, traders, clients and subscribers. “Without a doubt, achieving the award through voting sends a powerful message,” he says. “IG Markets has always had a strong focus on clients, and we do the research to meet their existing and changing needs. The company is innovative and always looking to launch new products at a fast pace.” Its PureDMA platform, launched early this year, has been well received by clients demanding greater price transparency, Szabo says.

Best Forex Broker: GFT

Technology, customer service and innovation are the three pillars that GFT founder and president Gary Tilkin envisaged when starting the company in 1997. And the company believes its continuing strength in the three pillars is why it won the The Stockies. Simon Marmot, GFT’s marketing director/Australia, explains: “We offer three different propriety platforms for trading global markets – PC, web and mobile, with a suite of institutional quality risk management tools. We have superior education, research, analysis and daily commentary, including trading signals. To top this offer, we offer 24/7 support via live chat, phone, or email.”

Marmot describes The Stockies as a prestigious award to win.  “The difference with this celebrated award is that it’s category specific involving true Australian investors with varying degrees of trading knowledge and experience,” he says. “Indeed, these same investors are voting and, therefore, deciding on who deserves to win in each category as opposed to a panel of judges. It’s this fact that makes this victory so sweet as it’s the power of the consumer voice.”

Best Online Broker: CommSec

Never content to rest on its laurels, CommSec managing director Matt Comyn says the company is always “stretching and striving” to offer innovative products matched by impeccable service expected by clients, “who keep raising the bar”.

Australia’s giant online broker prides itself on consistency, and Comyn considers winning The Stockies in several categories a most satisfying reward from those who count – you, the voters.  “We appreciate the vote of confidence our customers have shown in choosing CommSec as their preferred online share broker, margin lender and options provider,” Comyn says. “Customer driven awards, such as The Stockies, are an invaluable indication that we’re on track in delivering on these expectations.”

He says CommSec is dedicated to catering for diverse and rapidly evolving customer needs.  Plans include enhancing website useability and offering an e-learning facility.  New product innovation includes tax reporting and enhanced charting tools. “Our vision is to be Australia’s finest financial services organisation, through excelling in customer service.”
