Legislation to set up a $1 billion housing infrastructure fund has been introduced to federal parliament.

Assistant Treasurer Stuart Robert says the fund will help the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation reduce pressure on housing affordability, primarily through supporting community housing providers.

The $1 billion would be appropriated over four years and includes $150 million already in the fund, he told the lower house on Thursday.
