Stocks making moves or news on the ASX at the close on Thursday, October 4:

BOQ – BANK OF QUEENSLAND – up 24 cents, or 2.2 per cent, at $11.01

Bank of Queensland shares have jumped after the lender reported a full-year profit slip of five per cent to $336 million but a decrease in faulty loans.

S32 – SOUTH32 – up 29 cents, or 7.3 per cent, at $4.25

Soaring aluminium prices, following the closure of Norsk Hydro’s Alunorte refinery in Brazil, have helped to lift South32 shares.

MFG – MAGELLAN FINANCIAL GROUP – up $2.11, or 7.8 per cent, at $29.10

Fund manager Magellan Financial Group has announced a role-swap for its chairman and chief executive, ahead of its annual general meeting on Thursday.

EVN – EVOLUTION – down 5 cents, or 1.8 per cent, at $2.68

NCM – NEWCREST MINING – down 34 cents, or 1.7 per cent, at $19.38

NST – NORTHERN STAR RESOURCES – down 25 cents, or three per cent, at $8.48

Gold stocks dropped off after news the Italian government appears to have softened its populist stance on budget deficit and debt, soothing investors’ nerves and sparking a move back to other higher-risk assets.

BPT – BEACH ENERGY – up two cents, or 0.9 per cent, at $2.19

ORG – ORIGIN ENERGY – up 13 cents, or 1.5 per cent, at $8.55

STO – SANTOS – up 10 cents, or 1.4 per cent, at $$7.45

Rising oil prices pushed energy stocks higher for a third straight session.
