Businessman Clive Palmer has applied to register his United Australia Party ahead of the federal election.

Mr Palmer, who formerly held the seat of Fairfax, has set up party headquarters in north Queensland and is expected to run for the Labor-held seat of Herbert, spending up to $15 million on a national campaign.

Objections to the party registration close on September 30.
