Stocks that were of interest on the Australian stock exchange on Friday:

BHP – BHP BILLITON – down 24 cents, or 0.71 per cent, at $33.33

RIO – RIO TINTO – down 11 cents, or 0.14 per cent, at $79.84

Iron ore prices edged up overnight, while Rio has signed a heads of agreement to sell its interest in Indonesia’s Grasberg – the world’s second biggest copper mine – for $US3.5 billion.

ORG – ORIGIN ENERGY – up 29 cents, or 3.08 per cent, at $9.72

OSH – OIL SEARCH – down three cents, or 0.33 per cent, at $9.02

STO – SANTOS – down five cents, or 0.81 per cent, at $6.16

Oil prices strengthened overnight as market focus returned to concerns about spare capacity following a warning from the International Energy Agency.

ANZ – ANZ BANK – down 19 cents, or 0.65 per cent, at $29.01

CBA – COMMONWEALTH BANK – down 36 cents, or 0.48 per cent, at $74.85

NAB – NATIONAL AUSTRALIA BANK – down 11 cents, or 0.39 per cent, at $28.04

WBC – WESTPAC – down 16 cents, or 0.54 per cent, at $29.60

Banking shares gave up some of their recent gains as investors took profits.

VEA – VIVA ENERGY – down 10 cents, or four per cent, at $2.40

Australian refining and marketing company Viva Energy fell slightly from its issue price of $2.50.
