OK, so now that we’re into the swing of things we can announce the winner of our weekly $500 cash prize in TheBull’s stock picking tournament.

We asked you to select the top performing energy stock for the week Monday 9 March to Friday 13 March – out of the list of stocks trading above $0.50 a share.

Mr B. Petry from Suffolk Park, NSW, chose Linc Energy with a target price of $1.75. His reason: “Just due for a bounce,” wrote Petry, and he couldn’t have been much closer to the mark. Linc Energy certainly ran last week, increasing by a spectacular 45.71 per cent to finish the week at $1.785.

Despite his confidence he didn’t trade in LNC last week and now thinks that the outlook is uncertain for the stock – “I’d say sideways unless the market picks up strongly”. He said he won’t be buying any LNC, instead he will be using the cash to buy 10,000 BEPPA (Babcock & Brown Infrastructure Group) at 5c. Congratulations B. Petry, the cheque is on its way to the address supplied in your email.

Interestingly, 7 per cent of TheBull members chose Linc Energy. One member wrote: “I think LNC is currently way undervalued considering their high quality coal assets and the potential for their UCG technologies. The current share price is not a true reflection of its worth due to short selling, high speculation and subdued investor confidence of late.”

Another member said: “I think LNC will be the big winner, the company is waiting to complete a large sale of coal assets to china. If this announcement is made this week, the share price will rocket.”

The second best performing stock for the week was Metgasco (MEL) up 27.91 per cent (and placed in a trading halt), followed by Tap Oil (TAP), up 18.8%, Worley Parsons (WOR), up 17.17%, and New Hope Corporation (NHC), rising 17.14% over the week.

67% of the 36 energy stocks were up, 33% shot up by more than 10%, and 33% were in the red.
